Sacramento County deputies are probing a violent incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park while Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were clearing an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.
Background
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies first arrived at the park on Howe Avenue just after 6:30 PM after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. After that, a second call came in mentioning a potential altercation unfolding within the park grounds.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Nevertheless, it became clear that hundreds of people had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by positioning themselves around the crowd and check here issuing commands over loudspeakers directing the crowd to leave immediately. Approximately 15 minutes were given for individuals to vacate.
At the height of the dispersal effort that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition rang out. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Responding personnel swiftly started finding those who had been shot.
Four Gunshot Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four gunshot victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. Those injured — made up of one woman and three men ranging in age through their in their early to late twenties — were brought to area medical facilities. Emergency physicians indicated that two were treated for serious injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one suffered minor injuries. Thankfully, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews arrived on scene and helped triage the four victims at the park.
The Investigation
The main crime scene seemed to have taken place adjacent to Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators identified extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were identified in the wrought iron perimeter fencing near the Home Depot store. This evidence indicated that a second shooter had been sending rounds south from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was locked down for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives worked tirelessly throughout the night.
Suspects Detained
Information obtained through law enforcement radio communications confirmed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was pulled over in an area within Solano County. Four suspects were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to pick up those detained for questioning. Surveillance footage confirmed that two individuals had fired weapons.
